National Park Update
Updated: Saturday, September 30, 2023
While Pigeon Forge is open and fully accessible, the Department of Tourism has received official news from Great Smoky Mountains National Park Public Affairs Office regarding the park’s closure due to the government shutdown.
All national park visitor centers, campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails, restrooms and facilities are closed through the remainder of the shutdown. Additionally, all volunteer activities, ranger programs and special events are cancelled.
Roads that remain open through the park are the Highway 441 “Spur” from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg, the Gatlinburg bypass and Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, North Carolina. All other roads within the park, including the Cades Cove loop, are closed during the shutdown.
There is no timetable for a reopening. However, as a gateway to the Smokies, we’re optimistic for a timely resolution of the shutdown.
Meanwhile, Pigeon Forge offers spectacular views of the Smokies and their fall foliage as well as access to many scenic drives in which to enjoy the area’s beauty amid the autumn colors. Our various attractions, including Dollywood’s Harvest Festival, provide many ways to experience fall and all its splendor.
Our travel specialists are available, Monday – Friday, at (800) 251-9100 to assist with any questions.
